In 2014, the venerable Nazarov Theater, located in Moscow‘s Olympic village, underwent an extensive renovation and was turned into a modern concert hall. At the behest of Russia‘s culture minister Vladimir Medina, the hall was named after the famous Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov. In addition to the internationally renowned Tchaikovsky Philharmony, the Rachmaninov Philharmonic Hall with a seating capacity of approx. 1,000 is the new home venue of the orchestra of the Moscow State Philharmonic Society.

For the purpose of turning the Nazarov Theater into a concert hall, the auditorium was completely gutted and deconstructed nearly down to its foundation walls. Under the lead of Moscow architect Pavel Gluschenkov, Müller-BBM Building Solutions prepared an acoustic design which met all requirements and quality criteria of a modern concert hall in terms of room acoustics and which also merged perfectly with the architect‘s creative ideas. Since the hall‘s geometry in the foyer areas could not be altered due to heritage requirements, the biggest acoustic challenge was to find a solution for the extensive width of the hall – an issue that was successfully solved by integrating raked boxes on the lateral walls.
