With a total of four building sections, the oldest and largest international school in Berlin-Mitte, the Berlin Metropolitan School, uses the area around a spacious schoolyard in the existing block development. The existing buildings within the "Spandauer Vorstadt" heritage site were erected in 1987 as an industrially prefabricated reinforced concrete system construction. In the newly created addition and extension of the school, a differentiated room program was created with an auditorium, a school library, common and quiet rooms as well as areas for independent learning and group work.
Particular attention was paid to the architecturally and geometrically sophisticated timber frame construction. Due to the lower heat-storing mass compared to a solid construction, special measures were developed to achieve a very good energy standard. In particular, the building components separating the storeys were the focus of an acoustically effective implementation in order to ensure appropriate structural sound insulation for school use. The visible use of wood as a building material inside the building, in combination with targeted room acoustics measures, ensures a pleasant indoor climate. In connection with the construction of a sports field on the roof area and the directly adjacent third-party residential buildings, a noise immission control forecast was carried out.
