Room Acoustics
Directly on the Lago di Llanquihue, south of Santiago de Chile, an opera and concert hall offering a fantastic view of the lake and of the volcano Osorno was inaugurated after a design and construction period of several years: the Teatro del Lago in Frutillar. In the early design phase, the geometry necessary for achieving optimum acoustics was defined for a future usage as an opera and concert hall. The raked stalls area and the raised rows of seats in the two balconies facilitate perfect acoustics as well as sightlines for performances on stage as well as concerts from the approx. 1,300 seats.Special attention was paid to the design of the proscenium and auditorium walls as well as of the ceiling. Together with the orchestra enclosure on stage, the finely structured proscenium walls serve for achieving a well-balanced sound in the auditorium during concerts and, at the same time, ensure that the musicians can count on the best possible conditions for hearing each others‘ instruments and for controlling their own performance. The extraordinary design and seemingly flowing movement of the ceiling and walls was perfectly implemented with local types of wood from the Chilean forests, and serves the most diverse acoustical and technical functions in an excellent way.
