The new Munich Volkstheater building is simply ideal

Culture & Event

The building was completed on time and on budget, its characteristic architectural design and state-of-the-art equipment impress the audience and residents alike.

Bavaria’s capital now has several brand-new, exciting cultural venues. One of them is the new Munich Volkstheater which was inaugurated on October 15, 2021, with a production by Christian Stückl.

Commissioned by the City of Munich, the complex project located in Munich’s Schlachthof district was planned by the general contractor Georg Reisch together with Stuttgart-based architects Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Oei, and was realized on a turnkey basis at a fixed price of €130.7 million.

Professional equipment for the new venue

The new theater building houses three venues for drama performances, musical productions, concerts and readings. The heart of the building is the main stage with an auditorium seating an audience of 600. Equipped with a powerful upper and lower stage machinery, a great variety of scenic performances is possible as well as a quick assembly and dismantling of the stage set. In addition, there are two other halls seating an audience of 200 and 100, respectively. All three halls can be used simultaneously. The building also includes dressing rooms, workshops, storage rooms, offices for the artistic management and administration, artists’ accommodation as well as a restaurant with a beer garden. The entire Volkstheater building is barrier-free.

MÜLLER-BBM was involved in the preliminary project stages as well as during planning and execution

On behalf of the City of Munich and as a basis for the Europe-wide general contractor tender in 2016 that preceded the construction project, MÜLLER-BBM prepared the functional performance specifications for room acoustics as well as for the audio, video and stage management equipment. The acoustic experts and specialist planners assisted the general contractor competition; they also evaluated and reviewed the planning and execution work of the general contractor and its planning team regarding compliance with the established specifications.

Moreover, MÜLLER-BBM planned the initial audio, video and stage management equipment for the new Volkstheater while including, as far as possible, already existing technical equipment.
