Building Acoustics
The New Apostolic Church of Southern Germany has built a new place of worship for its congregation in Munich-Laim. The building comprises a church hall and various multifunctional rooms. By equipping the building with mobile partition walls, it was possible to achieve the desired high level of flexibility: by adding a foyer and multi-purpose rooms, the church hall can be expanded from 250 to 450 visitors. The building is deliberately kept visually restrained and clear.
The particular challenge of the room acoustics planning was the different usage scenarios of the church hall. On the one hand, high speech intelligibility during church services was an essential component of the room acoustics measures. On the other hand, choir, orchestra and organ music concerts were also to fill the room with excellent sound. In particular, the focus should be on the new pipe organ. This demanding room acoustics objective was achieved through a variety of individual geometric and sound-absorbing measures. For example, the side walls and the mobile sliding elements were inclined in such a way that no disruptive sound reflections could occur. Structured ceilings ensure the required direct sound component and a high level of acoustic diffusivity. The seat cushions have been acoustically optimized to ensure ideal reverberation characteristics even at events with low attendance.
