A great success for the 33rd elementary school on Schilfweg in Dresden. With their innovative new school building, they came out on top of the competition. We would like to thank everyone involved for their excellent cooperation and congratulate them on this award!
The building was planned and realized from the outset with sustainability in mind using modular timber construction. The three-dimensional room modules enabled a construction time of just nine months, which is impressive.
Second place went to the sports hall on Emilienstraße in Chemnitz. Constructed entirely from wood and covering an area of 1,000 square meters, the hall promises long-term use without major renovation work thanks to its durable building materials.
The office building of the German Biomass Research Center (DBFZ) in Leipzig received the bronze medal. It is the first multi-storey building of its kind to use wood as the main construction material, with only the stairwells being made of reinforced concrete.
State Minister Thomas Schmidt emphasized the importance of timber construction at the award ceremony: “The Timber Construction Prize is an outstanding demonstration of the impressive architectural and structural solutions that are possible with this special and indigenous building material. Building with wood has a long tradition in Saxony. At the same time, it is constantly evolving. Especially today, when the focus is on sustainable, environmentally friendly and affordable building materials, there are great opportunities in building with wood.”
