Acoustic Testing

Acoustic Testing

The development, product launch, and quality assurance of construction materials, building components, and technical products require reliable acoustic testing. For manufacturers, planners in the construction sector, and industrial applications, we perform standard-compliant laboratory tests as well as on-site measurements to determine acoustic properties.

Müller-BBM stands for objective measurements and robust calculations based on advanced measurement technology, powerful computational methods, and specialised test rigs. In our facilities, we carry out type testing and initial type testing in accordance with national and international standards, ensuring the acoustic performance of materials and components. Through on-site acoustic measurements, we verify sound insulation in newly constructed buildings as well as in existing structures.

We also see ourselves as a technical sparring partner: we develop measurement concepts, integrate new measurement techniques, and support the planning and construction of acoustic test rigs and measurement facilities.

Laboratory Testing and On-Site Measurements

Our laboratory tests and on-site acoustic measurements cover a wide range of acoustic parameters and enable a reliable assessment of materials, components, and in-situ building conditions:

  • Impact sound insulation of screeds, raised floors, cavity floors, and floor coverings such as parquet, laminate, carpet, etc.
  • Sound absorption of wall and ceiling linings, insulation materials, baffles, wall panels, curtains, textile floor coverings, noise barriers, and vehicle interior components
  • Airborne sound insulation of walls, façades, doors, panels, windows, glazing, air transfer units, ventilation components, roller shutter boxes, as well as components for automotive and rail vehicles and noise barriers
  • Sound power of building services equipment (MEP), machinery, household appliances, etc.
  • Airborne and impact sound insulation between adjacent residential units, commercial spaces, healthcare facilities, educational buildings, etc.
  • Measurement of noise levels from building services systems
  • Measurements of acoustic comfort in rooms with diverse acoustic requirements and usage profiles

Our Testing Capabilities

Wall Test Facility, Window and Door Test Rig

In our wall test facility in accordance with DIN EN ISO 10140-5, we investigate airborne sound insulation of wall and roof constructions, doors, façade elements, noise barriers, and interior and exterior components of vehicles.

Measured parameters include:

  • Sound reduction index according to DIN EN ISO 10140-2
  • Standardised level difference according to DIN EN ISO 10140-2
  • Standardised flanking level difference according to DIN EN ISO 10848-2
  • Normalised flanking impact sound level according to DIN EN ISO 10848-2

Evaluation is carried out in accordance with DIN EN ISO 717-1 and application-specific regulations such as ZTV-ING, DIN EN 1793-2, DB-RiL 804.5501, or DIN EN 16272-2.

Intensity Test Facility

In our intensity test facility, we conduct precise sound insulation measurements using sound intensity methods in accordance with DIN EN ISO 15186-1 and determine sound power levels according to DIN EN ISO 9614-2.

For high-resolution surface scans, we use robot-assisted measurement systems.

Floor Test Facility

The floor test facility is used to analyse the reduction of impact sound through floor constructions such as screeds and floor coverings. Measurements are carried out on a standardised massive reference floor in accordance with DIN EN ISO 10140-5.

Material Testing Laboratory

In our material testing laboratory, we determine acoustic and structural-dynamic properties of materials and components.

These include:

  • Acoustic impedance, sound absorption, and transmission coefficients of small samples using an impedance tube (Kundt’s tube)
  • Airflow resistivity according to DIN EN ISO 9053-1
  • Dynamic stiffness according to DIN EN 29052-1 / ISO 9052-1
  • Vibration behaviour and loss factor (e.g. for panels according to DIN EN ISO 6721-3)

Reverberation Room & Reverberation Chamber

Our reverberation room enables precise measurements in a diffuse sound field for the determination of sound absorption, sound power, and insertion loss in accordance with standards.

Typical measurements include:

  • Sound absorption coefficient of large surface elements according to DIN EN ISO 354, evaluated per DIN EN ISO 11654 or ASTM C423
  • Equivalent absorption area of individual objects
  • Sound power of noise sources according to DIN EN ISO 3741
  • Insertion loss of ventilation components according to DIN EN ISO 7235

For smaller samples (approx. 1 m²), our reverberation chamber is available. It allows comparative testing under diffuse field conditions, particularly suitable for prototype development and project-specific material selection.

On-Site Acoustic Measurements

In addition to laboratory testing, we provide comprehensive on-site acoustic measurements:

  • In-situ measurements of noise barriers using the Adrienne method (DIN EN 1793-5/-6, DIN EN 16272-5/-6, ZTV-ING)
  • Building acoustics measurements according to DIN EN ISO 16283 (airborne and impact sound insulation)
  • Noise level measurements of building services systems according to DIN EN ISO 10052
  • Recognised sound insulation testing body (VMPA) in accordance with DIN 4109
  • Measurements of junction systems according to DIN EN 16286-2
  • Room acoustics measurements according to DIN EN ISO 3382 (Parts 1–3)

Accredited testing and calibration laboratories are required to maintain an up-to-date list of the standards for which they are accredited. These standards are typically specified in the annex to the accreditation certificate. Within the scope of flexible accreditation, different editions of a standard may be applied, provided that the respective version has been internally verified.

An overview of the standards currently applied in our laboratories, along with their respective verification status, can be found here.
