After a four-year period in the interim venue Tonhalle Maag, the famous Tonhalle-Orchester returned to their lakeside headquarters. The renovation and restoration of the Tonhalle Zürich was successfully completed in 2021. This historic concert hall, designed by the renowned Viennese architects Fellner & Helmer, was originally inaugurated in 1895. Ever since, it has undergone numerous modifications, additions and renovations, and has now again become a modern concert hall meeting high artistic standards while also fostering a sense of cultural identity. Extensive status evaluation measurements, both in the unoccupied and occupied hall, as well as numerous measurements performed on the podium and special sound recordings formed the basis for the renovation measures. In the process, a new organ with a compact body was developed and skillfully integrated into the space. The new hall floor is directly connected to the supporting level in the hall‘s longitudinal axis and to the front part of the new extended orchestra podium, whose width and depth can be flexibly adjusted to modern performance requirements. As a result, the vibration energy generated during music performances can be transmitted directly to the hall floor, thus noticeably enhancing the concert experience for the audience. The new fabric covers of the refurbished seats were optimized in terms of acoustics and help to compensate the difference in reverberation times during rehearsals and concert performances.
