The school building in Leipzig-Grünau, built in 1929 in the Bauhaus style, was extensively renovated and converted for use as a three- to four-form secondary school. All teaching areas as well as the assembly hall, sports hall and dining hall, including the outdoor facilities, have been adapted to the needs of a modern school while preserving the building fabric. New elevators and ramps will provide barrier-free access to all floors in future.

The damage to the building complex, which had been vacant since 2012, was enormous. The building had to be drained and extensively renovated in terms of energy efficiency. Windows, ceilings and roofs were extensively thermally insulated and the building technology was completely renewed – all in strict compliance with the requirements of monument protection. As a result, the historic building meets the requirements of EnEV 2014. The refurbishment in line with listed building regulations also includes measures to improve the room acoustics in the classrooms and group rooms as well as in the gymnasium, which has been converted into a dining hall.

The implementation of appropriate structural sound insulation was particularly challenging here because the unusual ceiling constructions, which were innovative at the time, and the generous glazing in the corridor walls had to be preserved. These plans were efficiently supported by acoustic measurements of the historic building fabric.
