The Dresden Main State Archives are located in the government district in the Innere Neustadt neighbourhood. The listed building complex was built between 1912 and 1915 and has now been given an adjoining extension for capacity reasons. The compact, cube-shaped new building was constructed in reinforced concrete and has a ventilated brick façade. It houses eight storage levels, three of which are underground, with corresponding shelving systems and one floor with workshops. The main task of the building is to protect the archive material from external damage such as climatic fluctuations and air pollution.

The main planning objective was to create the most consistent climate possible inside the new storage building in order to ensure optimum temperature and humidity conditions for the archived materials. By optimising the passive components, the use of air conditioning technology was kept to a minimum. In order to achieve low operating costs in the long term, the new archive building was planned in accordance with the requirements of the passive house standard and optimised with the help of extensive simulations. The building was certified by the Passive House Institute as a "quality-tested passive house" and won the German Passive House Award 2010.
