Thermal Insulation & Energy Performance Calculation
The bungalow development north of the Olympic Park, built in 1972 as part of the Olympic Games, has been used for student accommodation since the athletes left. As refurbishment would not have been economically viable, the buildings were demolished and rebuilt in an almost identical cubature. Taking into account the urban context, the density was increased by reducing the axial dimension of the residential units, so that 1052 residential units are now available instead of 800. Twelve existing buildings were restored and remain as monuments in use.
As all walls and ceilings are made of prefabricated reinforced concrete elements with visible quality, the particular challenge was to achieve the necessary insulation standard. The high-quality, internally insulated wall construction had to be connected to the roof, which was insulated on the upper side, without thermal bridges. Standard parapet sheeting and covering the prefabricated joints were not possible. Special constructions had to be developed and precision sealing work carried out. Some complex connections could only be solved during construction. Details were also developed that deviated from the specifications of the usual regulations with the consent of the client.
