The Fritz-Karsen-Schule is an integrated secondary school in the Berlin district of Britz, where around 1,200 pupils are taught. The school is the oldest state comprehensive school in Germany. In 2011, an extension building for all-day care was completed for the upper secondary school as part of the school structure reform and the economic stimulus program II. The two-storey extension provides space for four classrooms, two art rooms, a course room, a library, a media room, two staff rooms and a studio.
The funding requirements stipulated that the maximum permissible values for the annual primary energy requirement and the transmission heat transfer coefficient in accordance with the current EnEV must be undercut by at least 30%. In addition, the building was shown to be approx. 32 % below the reference building in terms of CO2 emissions. The execution quality was checked with airtightness measurements and the airtightness approaches selected in the design phase were subsequently confirmed.
When planning the room acoustics, the focus throughout the school building was on good audibility and reducing the sound pressure level. This objective was successfully reconciled with the architectural requirements by combining sound-absorbing measures with suitable ceiling sails.
