On 22 August 2024, the rebuilt tower of the Garrison Church in Potsdam was ceremoniously opened and is now open to the public again. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who acted as patron of the project, gave a speech as part of the opening programme in which he described the Garrison Church as a place that confronts us with our history and at the same time offers space for debates about the future.
In Potsdam, the Garrison Church tower, which was bombed out during the Second World War and blown up in 1968, was rebuilt. The reconstruction is being carried out in two phases, starting with the tower. The nave will follow at a later date.
As part of the reconstruction consortium led by Hilmer Sattler Architekten Ahlers Albrecht, we were responsible for planning the thermal insulation as well as the building and room acoustics. Particular attention was paid to combining the historical character of the tower with the requirements of modern utilisation possibilities. In future, the reconstructed building will be used as a church, educational centre and memorial.
