Room Acoustics
The listed artist's villa of the former violin virtuoso Henri Marteau (1874 – 1934) was converted into an international music venue by the district of Upper Franconia in the 1980s. Every year, around 40 master classes are held here with renowned lecturers, where young musicians hone their skills. A spectacular concert hall has now been added to Haus Marteau. The underground space, designed by Peter Haimerl Architekten, presents itself like a sculpture, equipped with a total of 33 granite slabs of different shapes and sizes.
For this architecturally spectacular design, acoustically excellent concert and music teaching conditions were to be created at the same time. The room cubature and especially the geometry and alignment of the 40 mm thick granite slabs were acoustically examined and optimized in close cooperation with the architect. The granite slabs reflect and diffuse sound in equal measure and contribute to outstanding hall acoustics.
The podium and the wooden spectator stands as well as the upholstered seating create an acoustic balance to the granite bodies and concrete walls. The audience is seated in four rows of seats to the side of the stage in direct spatial and acoustic proximity to the artists, which ensures a high degree of acoustic transparency. This special room design focuses on interaction with the audience and provides an exceptional setting for the various master classes for violin, piano or singing, as well as wind instruments and percussion.
