Thermal Insulation & Energy Performance Calculation

The new building of the Museum of Modern Literature, overlooking the valley of the Neckar River, complements the building ensemble on the Schiller grove, formed by the National Schiller Museum and the German Literature Archive. The new museum is divided into a public area, archives as well as areas for scientific work. The museum‘s collection combines the Nachlass of important writers and publishers‘ archives.

In the new museum building, the very high standards of a constant indoor climate have to be met for protecting the exhibits. During the planning process, it was of great importance to optimize the energy efficiency of the building envelope for the purpose of reducing the cost for heating and cooling, and to avoid excessive temperature fluctuations. While taking into account the sophisticated architectural specifications, among other things analyses for the best possible design of the summer thermal insulation were performed.

In the field of building acoustics, the challenge was to significantly reduce the noise level of the ventilation unit so as to preserve a special atmosphere in the exhibition areas. In this connection, acoustical measures were defined for the individual areas since the architectural design included acoustically effective surfaces only to a very limited extent.
