The central bus station ZOB is located directly on the Hackerbrücke in the immediate vicinity of the main railway station. The Munich office of Auer+Weber+Assoziierte won the architectural competition back in 2002, and the ZOB was completed in 2009. The central design feature of the design is the aluminium tube shell over the building, which slopes slightly towards the main station and gives the building the appearance of an ICE railhead. The underground car park and a discotheque are located in the basement of the ZOB, the actual bus station is located on the ground floor and the level above houses a passageway with various retail outlets and restaurants. The other floors are used for offices. The sound insulation of the facade against the railway line and a high energy standard were of primary relevance for the project. Furthermore, vibration and shock protection against the directly adjacent railway line posed a particular challenge with regard to the originally planned hotel use. The hotel use was ultimately rejected as the required construction work proved to be too great. By skilfully separating the noisy discotheque from the rooms in the building that were worthy of protection, it was possible to keep the cost of internal noise protection relatively low.
