The planning concept for the long-term accommodation of the Robert Koch Institute envisages concentration on just two properties in Berlin-Wedding in the immediate vicinity of the Charité University Hospital (Virchow Clinic). A new laboratory and office building (Building 6) with high-security laboratories will be built on the Seestraße campus for scientific work and an existing laboratory and office building (Building 5) will be renovated.

A thermally effective building envelope was designed with the main aim of optimizing the energy quality of the building. Correspondingly favorable values were issued in the verification certificates for the Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV).

The operation of the high-security laboratories in Building 6 requires technical systems with high functional and safety standards. Suitable measures were defined for the sensitive electron microscopes to prevent vibrations caused by the heavy traffic load on Seestraße.

The very stringent requirements of the Environmental Agency for noise immission protection of the neighboring Virchow Clinic were met by appropriate acoustic dimensioning.
