Building Acoustics
Erected around 1800, the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo is well known for its special historic ambience and unique acoustics. Over the years, it was renovated several times. The latest refurbishment was completed in 2020 and involved a fundamental restoration and expansion of the building, including the auditorium, rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms and plant rooms. In addition, a stateof-the-art ventilation system was installed. The historic parts of the building, particularly the horseshoe-shaped auditorium seating an audience of about 1,220, were renovated while taking into account all heritage requirements. The surfaces in the auditorium were elaborately restored and the paintings were faithfully reproduced. Thanks to specific planning measures, the sophisticated acoustics was further improved. In the boxes, the absorption surfaces were successfully reduced so that the acoustics in the auditorium is now even more vivid than in the past. The new wooden floor construction can transmit noticeable vibrations, and the new mechanical orchestra podium provides great flexibility in terms of orchestra arrangement and usage of the auditorium. Moreover, a completely new floor level was added under the auditorium for technical, sanitary and storage rooms. All in all, the Teatro Donizetti is now equipped with the latest technical installations and meets all requirements for contemporary theater operation as well as for safety and fire protection.
