Sound Isolation
On the busy Mitteler Ring in Munich, five new buildings were constructed as a noise protection development with residential use. The residential building was realised in the Richard-Strauss-Straße section parallel to the road in order to reduce the noise pollution for the five similar row buildings from the 1950s aligned perpendicular to the ring road and to make living there more attractive. The new building complex is connected to the existing buildings by narrow, transparent noise barriers. In addition to providing light to the noise-protected courtyard the noise-protected courtyard, it also serves as an access wing.
As the new buildings themselves are particularly exposed to street noise, the floor plan design and construction of the street façade posed a major challenge. In order to comply with the sound insulation requirements, the rooms requiring shading face the quiet courtyard side, while the kitchens, bathrooms and stairwells are orientated towards the street. A double-skin concrete façade with soundproof windows also allows living spaces with natural lighting from the courtyard and street side with a pleasant basic noise level.
