The L40 building at Linienstraße 40 near Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin-Mitte is an uncompromising new construction that deliberately defied traditional urban planning guidelines and made an urban statement with its sculptural, monolithic form. It was created between 2008 and 2010 based on plans by Bundschuh Architekten (with Roger Bundschuh and Philipp Baumhauer) in collaboration with artist Cosima von Bonin and is entirely focused on high-quality living spaces—especially for collectors and gallery owners—as well as commercial units on the ground floor. The central theme was the creation of a black façade with a seamless exposed concrete look. At the same time, the challenging architecture with cantilevers of over twelve meters meant that a particularly light and load-bearing concrete had to be found. Based on various variant studies, a double-shell exterior wall construction with core insulation was developed. Due to the strong heating of the black concrete surface, temperature-related stresses and length changes had to be determined as the basis for dimensioning the reinforcement of the outer shell.
