The new Max Planck Institute for Chemistry is located on the western edge of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz campus. It consists of a six-storey tower, which marks the campus path, and a four-storey main building, which encloses the central courtyard. The tower houses the library, the seminar area and the administration, while the main building accommodates the laboratories and offices. A multi-storey entrance hall connects the seminar and administration areas with the research wing. At the rear, a workshop building with an attached greenhouse adjoins the building.
In addition to the structural measures for a high-quality energy-efficient building standard and corresponding structural and room acoustics designs, the focus was particularly on protecting the highly vibration-sensitive equipment installed in the laboratory building. Not only external exciters (road traffic) had to be taken into account, but above all internal sources of interference, such as all building services systems and the movement of people during the building's operation. Depending on the respective specifications, high-quality storage and installation variants as well as special foundations were developed for the individual devices.
