Expertises
Room Acoustics

Luslawice, situated about 90 kilometers east of Krakow, Poland, now has a first-rate concert hall which forms part of the European Krzysztof Penderecki Center for Music. Krakow-based architect DDJM built this center right in the open countryside or rather right next to Krzysztof Penderecki's Arboretum, a park with a manor. The 9,000 m³ concert hall with its acoustical variability seats up to 700 and boasts a 210 m² podium for orchestra and choir. Moreover, the Center for Music houses various lecture halls, rehearsal rooms, studios, a library, a recording studio, accommodation facilities and, last but not least, a terrace for open-air concerts.

The client clearly focuses on a perfect interpretation of classical as well as contemporary music and on experimenting with recent compositions. The conditions for rehearsals of small ensembles in the unoccupied hall as well as for performances of works for large orchestras in the occupied hall need to be equally good. For the purpose of such flexibility, large acoustic banners may be unfolded in front of the lateral gallery walls as needed. The segmentation of the individual panel modules with their differing inclinations and surfaces on walls, ceiling and balcony balustrades ensures a perfect scattering of sound. Even before the first rehearsals started, the entire room acoustics concept had become a success story. During the inauguration concerts in the fully occupied auditorium, both musicians and audience as well as press representatives were enthusiastic about the hall‘s sound volume and the complexity of piano and fortissimo passages alike.
