The new building of the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Light is a state-of-the-art research complex for basic research in the field of modern optics and optical materials. The new building is located on the edge of the "Exerzierplatz" nature reserve in close proximity to the FAU campus. A total of around 10,000 m² of usable space is available in the three independent structures with laboratory building, workshop building and clean room laboratory. The five-storey laboratory building above ground, with its high-gloss black glass façade and impressive skylight, contains technical and laboratory rooms as well as office space, a library, seminar and meeting rooms and apartments for guests of the institute. The workshop and clean room building are connected to the main building at a lower height.
One focus of the consultation was on vibration protection for the vibration-sensitive laboratory facilities. At the interface with thermal building physics, a special thermal insulation was installed under the floor slab. As part of the room acoustics consultation, measures tailored to the architectural requirements were developed for the seminar and meeting rooms. In some areas of the building, the interaction with the concrete core-activated ceiling also had to be taken into account. In terms of energy efficiency, the requirements of EnEV 2009 were undercut by 25 %.
