Reopening of the Asam building in Freising: A new cultural centre shines brightly

Culture & Event

After seven years of construction, Freising reopened the historic Asam building as a unique cultural and civic centre on 19 July 2024. The baroque building in the centre of Freising now houses a theatre hall, a city museum, restaurants and more. The reception for invited guests in the flower-decorated Asam courtyard and the subsequent ceremony in the Asam Hall marked the highlight of this event.

The complex renovation of the Asam building

The Asam building, built between 1695 and 1758, originally served as a lyceum. It has now been completely renovated for the first time. The structural challenges were considerable. Nevertheless, demolishing the monument was not an option for the city of Freising. Thanks to state-of-the-art technology and extensive monument protection measures, the building was preserved and modernised.

Modern solutions and outstanding sound quality

Thanks to our extensive expertise in the areas of audiovisual system planning as well as building and room acoustics, we were able to play a key role in shaping the project. Our tasks included the complete refurbishment of the two event halls and other rooms with state-of-the-art audio and video technology in order to offer visitors a first-class event experience in the future. The refurbishment focussed on installing a new ventilation concept, renewing the seating and curtains and improving sightlines to the stage. Prior to the refurbishment work, extensive building and room acoustics measurements were carried out as the basis for planning the acoustic measures. The optimisation of the room acoustics in the newly designed Asam Hall and the comprehensive measures to improve the building acoustics, including sound immission control, ensured that the Asam building meets the highest standards while retaining its historical charm.

A lively centre for art, culture and encounters

With the completion of the Asam building, Freising has gained a unique cultural and civic centre for a wide range of events that will revitalise the city centre in the long term. The mix of event halls, city museum, restaurant, café and vinotheque offers a wide range of possible uses.

The extensive general refurbishment of the Asam building was a labour of love that has paid off. The city of Freising now has a cultural centre that combines tradition and modernity in a unique way.
