In 2009, a comprehensive renovation and expansion project began for the Archaeological State Collection in Munich, funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Culture, Science and the Arts. Since 2024, the museum has shone in new splendour. The existing building from 1975, designed by Werz, Ottow, Bachmann and Marx, was completely refurbished and extended to include an underground special exhibition hall. This offers almost 600 square metres of unique exhibition space.

The striking six cubic exhibition pavilions and the administration area were modernised and extended by an underground exhibition unit. A multifunctional foyer with atrium now serves as an event room and offers space for a café with terrace on the first floor.
The staggered exhibition cubes are only accessible via necessary staircases without their own stairwells, which poses a particular challenge when it comes to ensuring escape routes. The complexity of the new underground exhibition cube, which lies inconspicuously beneath the play area of the neighbouring day care centre, is only evident in the above-ground smoke extraction and lighting structures. The safety precautions as a museum, in combination with the requirements of the fire brigade, make the building challenging.
Thanks to flexible seating plans, the museum can now offer external event organisers space for up to 700 people.
