As part of the Special Investment Program 2 of the federal government, the state of Berlin and the state of Brandenburg, the complete renovation of the palace on Peacock Island was carried out from 2021. The aim was to renovate the façade, repair the building envelope and conserve the historic interior.

The renovation was carried out under special conditions: The palace, which is unheated all year round and contains culturally and historically valuable parquet flooring, inlays and fabric-covered walls, had to be permanently protected from climatic influences. The exterior cladding also consisted of asbestos-containing material – a challenge for dust protection. To prevent the ingress of particles, the historically existing chimney flues were temporarily used as air supply ducts. A slight air overpressure ensured a low-dust working environment.

Technical modifications were made to the plinth and basement area in consultation with the conservation authorities to reduce the water load on the masonry and sandstone cladding. In particular, the wooden thresholds of the half-timbering are to be protected until the next renovation cycle in several generations.

The palace is a listed building and is part of the overall Pfaueninsel complex, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. It will continue to be used as an unheated museum even after the measures have been completed. With its reopening in May 2025, the palace is now open to the public again – as a unique testimony to Prussian architecture and romantic landscape design.
