Opposite Dortmund's main train station, a new cult location for fans and friends of soccer has been created in just under three years of planning and construction (2012 – 2015). The plans for the new soccer museum were drawn up by Düsseldorf-based HPP Architekten, who were one of the two winners of a Europe-wide competition organized by the city of Dortmund and the German Football Association (DFB) with 24 participants.
From the outside, the museum presents itself as an elevated box with a perforated metal façade. Its hexagonal fields are reminiscent of a soccer pattern. The spaces in between can be used flexibly with interchangeable banner graphics. Activities around the building, which temporarily incorporate the public space, are part of the museum concept. Current topics can be communicated on a large scale on the LED façade. The east façade of the museum is characterized by a flush-mounted LED display covering an area of 24 m x 2.5 m, which is positioned directly above the entrance area and extends across the entire width of the building. The 60 m² LED surface is equipped with 965,440 SMD RGB LEDs spaced 8 mm apart, which are mounted on a total of 96 LED modules of different sizes. The entire display is dust and waterproof and certified for continuous outdoor use. All feed systems are redundant and are constantly monitored by a higher-level monitoring system.
