Within walking distance of Berlin's main train station, the organization SOS-Kinderdorf opened an educational and community center. The building was designed to serve as both a sanctuary and a stage, facilitating diverse forms of inclusion. It includes a training restaurant, a vocational school, an integrated hotel operation, offices, conference rooms, and a "city balcony" with an attached bar.The client's desire for minimalist technical and thus cost-effective equipment, such as foregoing cooling for the building, led to special measures for summer heat protection. Architects developed a specific, full-surface external sunshade made of suspended glass fiber fabric elements, enabling sophisticated thermal comfort within the spaces. Based on measured spectral data, Müller-BBM Building Solutions determined the attenuation level of the fabric in front of triple sun protection glazing and provided evidence of the achievable sun protection effect of the facade through radiation physics calculations.Regarding the energy quality of the building's thermal envelope, according to the EnEV 2014, the requirement value for the annual primary energy demand was demonstrated to be 28% lower than that of a reference building.
