The Münchner Kammerspiele, one of Munich‘s most prestigious theaters, was comprehensively refurbished and expanded. The refurbishment works in particular addressed the art nouveau theater – protected by a preservation order – with its auditorium and foyer area. The fly tower was considerably expanded and equipped with new stage technology. Directly adjoining the theater, a new building was erected housing the workshops of e.g. carpenters and locksmiths. Before the start of the refurbishment works, the theater was assessed acoustically and surveyed. Based on these findings, a design for improved room acoustics was developed which in particular included a new seating as well as the acoustic insulation of the expanded fly tower. The replacement of technical installations, e.g. the ventilation system, required specific sound insulation measures in the old building for avoiding any transmission of disturbing noise during performances and rehearsals. The strict structural separation in terms of building acoustics by means of joints as well as the installation of highly effective acoustic doors make it possible to operate the workshops directly adjoining the rear stage. In the new building‘s basement, a completely decoupled recording studio was installed for high-class speech and music recordings as well as for the production of playback material.
