The Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus forms the eastern end of the “Federal Belt“ in the government district on the banks of the river Spree. With its library, archive, the parliamentary and press documentation offices as well as specialized research ser-vices, the building is the German Parliament‘s information and service center. The open-plan design and visual transparency not only characterize the large hall – bathed in natural light – from which about 600  offices can be accessed, but also the library rotunda and the hall for public hearings of parliamentary committees. Since 2014, an extension has completed the seat of government on the east bank towards Luisenstraße.

The large hall for hearings with its almost square floor plan of approx. 290 m² presented a spe-cial challenge in terms of acoustics. Depending on the selected arrangement of the furnishing, the three-story hall seats up to 145 plus 130 more on the gallery – however, these seats are reserved for members of the press. Notwithstanding the large glazings and the desired fairfaced concrete finish, first-rate acoustics and perfect intelligibility were created in the hall by means of skillfully installed room acoustical measures. Not only did the Federal Government as the client attach great importance to a representative and highly functional building, but also to its cost effectiveness, very little pollutant emission and a high degree of energy saving, which was achieved with values far below the applicable thermal insulation requirements.
