The number of member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) or l'Organisation Mon-diale de la Propriété Intellectuelle (OMPI) is constantly increasing. For this reason, the World Intellectual Property Organization needed a new building with a conference hall with up to 900 seats. The new building is located in Geneva's international district near the Place des Nations and focuses on sustainability. Local wood stocks and natural light sources were used for the construction. Hybrid ventilation and - as part of the Genève - Lac Nations (GLN) project - a lake water cooling system are also planned.
Together with Behnisch Architekten from Stuttgart, the building physics concept was developed with a supporting structure made of wood, taking into account not only the high requirements for thermal insulation but also diffusion-related aspects in the design of the exterior walls and roof structures. This also applies to sound insulation against external noise, as the building is located directly on a main inner-city road in Geneva. The room acoustics for the new conference hall with a seating capacity of around 900 people are designed for optimum speech intelligibility, whereby the acoustic measures are practically imperceptible visually thanks to the use of micro-perforated wooden acoustic panels.
