The Museum of the Bavarian Kings was created on the banks of the Alpsee in the rooms of the former Hotel Alpenrose. The three parts of the building - Jägerhaus, Mittelbau and Alpenrose - have been completely renovated. The Jägerhaus houses the administration as well as presentation areas. The central building was extended with a barrel vault and houses the central, elaborately designed exhibition rooms. A restaurant was set up on the first floor and second floor of the Alpenrose. The other upper floors are once again being converted for hotel use to a luxurious and high-class standard. The conversion work in the heterogeneous, listed building was a challenging task for the planning team led by Staab Architekten. The uninsulated historic façade and the full air conditioning required for the exhibition necessitated special thermal and diffusion measures on the exterior components. In the highly glazed rooms in the area of the building extension, it was possible to demonstrate compliance with the required climate constancy by means of building climate simulation calculations.
For the hotel and restaurant use, the focus was on achieving a high standard of sound insulation with the historic wooden beam ceilings and the existing, highly inhomogeneous wall structures. It was also necessary to protect the basement from the effects of moisture on the exterior walls, which are not sealed from the outside and only accessible to a limited extent, for the use of high-quality ancillary restaurant rooms.
