The ‘New Park Centre’ in Luisenpark Mannheim, created for the 2023 Federal Garden Show, is one of the park's main attractions. The new building, which includes an impressive bird aviary and a penguin pool, blends harmoniously into the traditional park, which has served as a recreation and exhibition centre since the 19th century. The building, designed by Bez + Kock, impresses with a curved roof disc on slender steel supports, which not only shades the interior spaces but also the outdoor area. The restaurant with its glass front facing the Kutzerweiher pond and the large penguin enclosure, which offers visitors unique insights into the world of penguins, are particularly striking.

Our services for this project included overall building physics consulting and fire protection. We drew up detailed escape and rescue plans and fire brigade plans to ensure the safety of visitors and employees. As part of the overall building physics consultation, it was important to consider the construction of the curved roof disc on slender steel supports, as it not only shades the interior spaces but also the outdoor areas. The recessed façades follow the contours of the roof and contribute to passive climate regulation. The large glass fronts in the restaurant area and the dark green glazed ceramic cladding in the adjoining rooms posed particular challenges, both of which fulfil aesthetic and functional requirements. The use of tamped concrete in the basement, where the aquariums are located, also required special attention with regard to moisture protection.
