Acoustic Measurements
The Great Hall of the Mozarteum Salzburg is still regarded today as an ideal venue for the performance of Mozart’s works, thanks to its outstanding acoustics and magnificent interior. Over a period of nearly five years, the hall underwent renovations in three stages, all carried out in strict accordance with heritage preservation requirements. In 2024, the final phase of the renovation was successfully completed in time for the Salzburg Festival, allowing audiences to once again experience the 110-year-old historic hall in all its renewed splendour. Throughout the entire process, preserving the hall’s excellent acoustics remained the top priority.Müller-BBM Building Solutions oversaw all renovation measures from an acoustic engineering perspective and was responsible for extensive measurement campaigns. Acoustic tests were conducted in reverberation chambers and laboratories on both the original and restored seating, as well as on the old and newly produced curtains. Key factors that significantly contributed to the positive overall outcome included the expert restoration of the curtains, the complete replacement of the hall’s flooring, the meticulous refurbishment of the seating, and the redesign of the balcony parapets and box walls.Measurements taken throughout all renovation phases, as well as final on-site assessments, demonstrate that the hall’s exceptional acoustic properties have not only been preserved through the restoration process but have even been moderately enhanced. As a result, the Great Hall continues to provide an outstanding acoustic environment for a wide range of concert performances.
