The design for the Protestant Montessori school building in Freiburg goes back to a successful competition entry by Freiburg architects Spiecker and Sautter in 2011. The first of the three construction phases (secondary school with sports hall and school canteen) was completed in September 2014. The modern three-storey school building comprises a generous amount of space with a two-court sports hall, multifunctional canteen / auditorium / foyer zone, various classrooms, differentiation rooms and specialist rooms as well as the necessary administrative areas. Lots of light, cheerful colors and the use of natural materials create a pleasant teaching and learning atmosphere.
The particular challenge of the building was the acoustic decoupling of the two-court sports hall, which is located directly above the administration rooms and the assembly hall. Special vibration-damping measures enable acoustically undisturbed sports use in parallel with school operations. Sound-absorbing baffle walls in combination with a perforated trapezoidal sheet steel roof and sound-absorbing radiant ceiling heaters ensure appropriate room acoustics during sports activities. In the central access zone, which is used as a foyer and break room as well as for lunch, a mobile podium can be set up in front of the glass façade for events. Appropriate room acoustics measures ensure the desired high level of speech intelligibility during theater performances, lectures and speeches.
