The Free State of Bavaria launched a competition back in 2012 to provide catering for the steadily growing number of students and employees on the Garching research campus of the Technical University of Munich. Since September 2019, a new building has replaced the outdated canteen from the 1970s. The new centrepiece of TUM's science and technology centre is located to the north of the campus centre. Up to 7300 meals per day can be served thanks to the self-service system.

The roof structure is a structural and design eye-catcher: a coffered ceiling made of steel-concrete. Like a disc detached from the solid base, it floats above the dining hall with food counter and gives the room its special character. The few supports allow for very flexible furnishing. Taking this clear architectural language into account, special room acoustics measures were developed, most of which are integrated into the soffit above the coffered ceiling in order to create a pleasant acoustic room climate and fulfil the requirements for the voice alarm system. The food counter on the upper floor and the dining hall are surrounded by a floor-to-ceiling glass façade. Dynamic thermal simulations were used to optimise the physical properties of the solar control glazing, taking into account the thermal storage masses, night ventilation, etc.
