The Fritz Henßler Vocational College at the Brügmann-Zentrum campus in Dortmund underwent a comprehensive refurbishment in accordance with heritage conservation requirements and was expanded by two new buildings. The school accommodates a wide range of vocational training programmes, including timber engineering, printing and media technology, as well as colour and interior design. As a result, the refurbishment and conversion works had to address a broad spectrum of highly specific functional and technical requirements. The refurbishment of the listed existing building required bespoke solutions for structurally, economically and building-physics-optimised junction details at floor connections and within the historic façade structures. Particular attention was given to improving sound insulation as well as to the thermal optimisation of thermal bridges and façade assemblies. The existing façade was sustainably integrated into a spacious new forum area. The entire building ensemble complies with the requirements of the German Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV 2009).Special emphasis was placed on the development and selection of acoustic upgrading measures for the existing separating floor structures, as well as on the implementation of targeted room acoustic measures in accordance with the relevant regulations and standards, including the German Noise and Vibration Occupational Safety Ordinance for particularly noisy workshop areas.
