Thermal Insulation & Energy Performance Calculation
As part of the conversion and renovation of the listed building, the Kulturpalast Dresden was given a new concert hall for 1,800 visitors at the heart of its existing building. The original building fabric was carefully reconstructed and integrated into the new design, and the facades were renovated to make them more energy-efficient. The result is a new cultural center of international standing, which unites the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, the city's central library and the cabaret "Herkuleskeule" and thus culture, education and entertainment under one roof. The new, open character is emphasized by the spacious connecting foyers, of which the large south foyer provides access.
A particular challenge was to achieve thermal comfort in the large three-storey entrance foyer. Extensive climate simulations were carried out in order to determine the structural requirements and conditions for optimum indoor climate conditions and to incorporate these into the planning. As part of the implementation planning, building physics details were also examined and developed, with a key focus on optimizing the thermal insulation of the building envelope. This task was extremely challenging, as the requirements of the conservation order of the state capital of Saxony also had to be observed.
