After a construction period of two years only, the highclass event center “MuK“ was inaugurated near Lübeck‘s Holsten Gate and the river Trave. The core of this sophisticated cultural building is an excellent concert hall seating up to 2,000 which serves as the main venue of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and may also be used for conventions. The widely glazed circular foyer with a view to Lübeck‘s historic center is designed for a multi-purpose usage such as meetings, trade fairs, exhibitions, concerts and a lot more.In the concert hall with its traditional shoebox shape, diffusely reflecting wall coverings with their undulating surface structures ensure a balanced sound and reverberation times of up to 2 s. For the area above the podium, a stainless steel reflector element was eveloped which facilitates the aural contact among the musicians and at the same time fulfills the architects‘ aesthetic requirements.By skillfully tuning the sound reinforcement system as well as by installing acoustic curtains, the reverberation time can be reduced to such an extent that the concert hall achieves the acoustical quality of a conference hall. The structural separation of the concert hall and other parts of the building ensures a very high sound insulation standard; as a result, the concert hall is used as a recording venue for classical music productions by the NDR (North German broadcasting corporation).
