Venice's theatre “La Fenice” with its uniquely decorated auditorium ranks among the most important classical Baroque theatres in Italy. The acoustics in this jewel of a theatre was described as being excellent. In January 1996, a devastating fire practically destroyed the entire building, all furniture, ornamentation and decoration. Upon the city government's decision, Venice‘s opera house was to rise from the ashes “com'era e dov'era”, how it was and where it was.Based on historical records, the auditorium was rebuilt as a faithful reconstruction in terms of the original shape and size as well as the materials used. The integration of state-of-the-art stage technology as well as ventilation and safety systems in the building's limited space required a very elaborate acoustic design with respect to sound insulation.Today's demand for larger orchestra sizes was taken into account by extending the orchestra pit under the proscenium area. The fact that acoustical details were implemented meticulously makes it possible that nowadays the audience can once more experience the excellent acoustics in the theatre “La Fenice”.
