Room Acoustics

In the center of Bolzano in South Tyrol, a new municipal theater was constructed in 1999. The so-called Large Hall with a volume of approx. 6,500 m³, seating 820, is mainly used for drama performances but is also well suited for opera and concerts.

All surfaces in this hall were optimized in terms of room acoustics. Special reflector elements on the upper lateral walls create very favorable lateral reflections in the auditorium. The seats are designed in such a way as to ensure good acoustics regardless of the audience occupancy rate in the hall.

In order to be able to adjust the acoustics in the auditorium as best as possible to the differing requirements of usage, Müller-BBM implemented a concept of variable acoustics. In this connection, flaps backed by absorption material were installed on the lateral walls of the balconies. Depending on the respective positioning of the flaps, the acoustics in the auditorium – in particular the reverberation time – may be fine-tuned and adjusted to both drama and opera performances as well as to concerts.

In addition, the specifically optimized orchestra shell in the fly tower creates favorable acoustic conditions for concert performances of large orchestras.
