In 2005, a new cultural centre was opened in Hangzhou, the metropolis with 6 million inhabitants located approx. 200 km from Shanghai. This new centre includes a large opera house (1,600 seats), a concert hall (600 seats) and a multi-purpose hall (400 seats).

For the opera house, perfect acoustics was of utmost importance which is directly reflected in the hall's design. The ceiling, proscenium area and orchestra pit were designed in such a way as to ensure a good sound transmission. The structured wooden panelling counteracts flutter echoes and helps in creating a balanced sound distribution. The opera house is equipped with elaborate stage technology. Two side stages as well as one backstage leave nothing to be desired in operating the theatre.

The concert hall and multi-purpose hall are designed as separate elements in the building, adjoining one of the side stages, respectively. By strictly separating the building structures, the required high level of sound insulation could be realized which is indispensable for an undisturbed simultaneous use of the halls. Thus, also the restaurant area above the auditorium is decoupled from the hall by means of spring elements.
