After a construction period of 24 months only, the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino‘s new concert hall seating an audience of 1,100 was inaugurated on December 21, 2021 – exactly ten years after the first opening of this modern building complex designed by ABDR architects. With the opera hall and the Cavea, an open-air auditorium on the roof, it houses three venues that can now be used simultaneously for an audience of over 5,000.

For the Sala Zubin Mehta, a traditional rectangular hall, MÜLLER-BBM Building Solutions designed numerous specific acoustic elements. A movable platform behind the orchestra podium provides space for 120 choir singers or the audience. Moreover, an orchestra pit for about 60 musicians was included along with additional stage technology features such as a stage curtain, a fabric proscenium and trusses for the stage set. The wooden floor structure in the audience area and on the podium transmits the orchestra sound during forte and fortissimo passages as perceptible vibrations to the audience, thus intensifying their listening experience.

The precisely designed ceiling with its stepping in transverse direction ensures an ideal propagation of sound to all audience seats as well as among musicians on the podium. In addition, the large wooden panels on the lateral walls, optimized in their inclination, provide the desired sound distribution and a perfect acoustic envelopment of the audience in this new concert hall.
