The Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering IBMT in Sulzbach/Saar has operated for decades as an internationally active research institute for applied biomedical engineering and medical technology. As part of the refurbishment, a former industrial complex—originally constructed as a shirt factory—was converted and expanded to create a modern, highly functional laboratory and research facility. With a usable floor area of approximately 3,298 m², a gross floor area of around 6,426 m², and an enclosed volume of nearly 30,000 m³, the new building meets high standards in terms of functionality, flexibility, and safety. The reorganization also resulted in the creation of a spacious main entrance with a representative foyer, from which the research areas are clearly structured and efficiently accessed—allowing for both effective communication and visitor reception as well as a clear separation and zoning of laboratory, office, and technical areas.
