A new building for the National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology has been constructed on the campus of the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Dresden-Blasewitz. The new OncoRay research and laboratory center includes a proton accelerator with therapy bunker, a laboratory animal area and medical therapy rooms. The complex also houses biomedical and biochemical research laboratories, seminar rooms and the clinic management. A high-performance laser laboratory with a clean room is located on top of the radiation protection bunker.The heart of the research complex is the radiation protection bunker with the proton acceleration facility for testing new technologies in proton therapy for cancer patients. For radiation protection reasons, the thermal insulation of the components in contact with the ground had to be minimized. With the help of detailed thermal bridge calculations, the minimum thermal insulation measures could be optimized. In addition, the limit values for the indoor climate to be taken into account when operating the air conditioning technology were defined. The result is the best possible radiation protection, which also guarantees the minimum building physics requirements for condensation and mold prevention. The extensive process and building services systems of the building complex were acoustically decoupled so that neither the partly highly sensitive test systems and therapy facilities nor the directly adjacent residential buildings are affected by noise in an unacceptable way.
