The Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences (HRW) has received a new building at its location in Bottrop, which enables contemporary university operations and offers an adequate environment for teaching and research. The building of the new campus sets an accent towards the city center with the entrance area of the head building. At the same time, the urban figure blends in respectfully with the surrounding individual buildings. An orthogonal, glazed main corridor connects the individual buildings with each other and ensures deep insights into the interior of the university and the inner courtyards. It is both a communicative connecting axis within the university and a reference element to the urban surroundings.
The design of the energy-saving thermal insulation measures meant that the building was able to undercut the applicable EnEV requirements of 2009 by 37%. Motor-controlled solar shading slats were used to protect the building from night-time cooling. The building and room acoustics investigations focused on the four large lecture theatres. In conjunction with the findings from test bench measurements, individual wall coverings were developed for the lecture theatres to ensure the required high level of speech intelligibility.
