After two years of construction, the Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU) was officially opened at Ulm University at the end of October 2014. The Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU) conducts research into highly efficient mobile and stationary electricity storage systems of the future.
The building design by Nickl & Partner Architekten AG has a characteristic façade design and makes reference to the themes of chemistry and physics. In the homogeneous outer façade plane made of perforated sheet metal elements, an exciting pattern of visual interference is created by perforations of different sizes, giving the building a high recognition value and its own identity.
The realized building falls below the requirements of the EnEV 2009 by more than 30 %, whereby in addition to a high-quality energy standard of the building envelope, attention was paid to the selection of efficient system technology.
The building's characteristic sun protection in the form of perforated sheet metal elements was optimized in collaboration with the architects with regard to the aspects of sun and glare protection. Structural dynamics studies were carried out for the vibration-sensitive laboratory equipment and – based on this – suitable mounting and installation variants as well as special foundations were developed.
