Room Acoustics
The Future Art Lab at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna brings together the Institute for Electroacoustic and Experimental Music, the Film Academy and the Institute for Keyboard Instruments in one modern building. The central rooms are the recording hall, a sound theatre, an arthouse cinema and a small concert hall. There are also control rooms, studios, teaching rooms and piano practice rooms. With the new building, the utilisation units that were previously spread across the city will be brought together in a central location on the campus site. The building is characterised by striking architecture and the requirement to implement the best conditions for acoustics.Due to the compact arrangement of highly noise-sensitive rooms in the immediate vicinity of noise-intensive musical uses, several massive room-in-room constructions were required to realise the high sound insulation standard. The room acoustics were planned using the latest simulation methods. The relatively small concert hall was deliberately given a high level of diffusion. Individual, partly variable room acoustics measures were designed and implemented for the sound theatre and the recording hall with the close involvement of the users. Acceptance measurements prove that the planned measures were implemented flawlessly.
