The new Oberstdorf thermal spa, due to be completed by the end of 2025, will be a forward-looking bathing and wellness centre that will replace the existing thermal spa and reposition the town as a tourist destination. The design by Auer Weber translates Alpine building tradition into a modern architectural language: individual structures with offset gabled roofs and wooden façades blend naturally into the landscape, while generous glass surfaces create sweeping views of the Allgäu Alps.Inside, around 450 m² of water surface area combine with a 3,000 m² sauna and spa area to create an open, light-flooded spatial structure. The focus was on creating spaces that convey a sense of security despite their openness. In terms of building physics, the task was to develop a contemporary energy standard for the building envelope that meets the increased requirements for moisture protection in timber construction under the special climatic conditions within the thermal baths. In addition, targeted acoustic measures ensure a quiet, pleasant atmosphere in the various areas.
