An eight-storey office building with three underground levels has been built directly on the banks of the Spree opposite Berlin's main railway station and in the immediate vicinity of the government district. The meandering structure, whose courtyards open outwards, offers space for around 1,100 workstations. Cafés and restaurants can be used by the public in the arcades along the riverside promenade at Humboldthafen. The realization of this extremely demanding construction project placed the highest demands on the ecological quality and energy efficiency of a user-friendly building. Müller-BBdM provided the client with consistent technical support during the DGNB certification process as part of all consulting services. In order to meet the high target, a particularly energy-efficient thermal insulation in combination with efficient system technology was required. In the verification procedure, it was possible to confirm the key requirement of falling 30% below the required annual primary energy requirement of EnEV 2009. In addition to the energy-saving building concept, three-pane glazing should be emphasized, which provides a high level of light transmission and at the same time ensures good sound insulation from the suburban and mainline railroad running directly past the building. The new HumboldtHafenEins office building was the first project in Germany to be awarded the highest DGNB certification and received the platinum seal of approval.
